A Personal Reflection: How Breath-work and Being Present Can Help You in Life & Business

Recently, there I was, on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere in Baja in an old Honda CRV, broken down yet again.

It wasn’t until my first breathwork session that my subconscious mind started to unravel itself – and memories started to come flooding back in. I had memories… of my childhood.

I was 10 years old and we got into a terrible car accident. My mother was driving and a car hit us head on. My brother was just 3 then – and there he was sitting next to me, covered in broken glass.

Those memories that were buried so deep inside of me, were now clear as day just like the reality of my broken down car in the middle of the desert.

It became obvious why I was ‘manifesting’ a broken down car - it was my tie to a forever gone past (my brother passed away some years later, well before his time).

Most of us believe we are moving towards our goals in our travel business and our lives to the best of our abilities, and but often feel stuck when we are unable to reach them. But the truth is that it’s the subconscious mind that runs the show.

With the challenges of running a travel business - operating in a world of pandemics, natural disasters, challenging clients, etc we’ve all experienced the sense of being a victim of circumstance.

We as travel industry professionals tend to be in reaction mode, and in turn are operating from our heads, instead of in our hearts. We are literally not breathing.

Breathing slows it all down, and helps us respond consciously, gracefully, peacefully, and powerful instead of reacting.

Breathing also helps us access our subconscious minds, visions, and desires which enables us to feel a sense of coherence and inner peace. When we are able to develop our own breath practice, we learn to regulate our nervous system and in turn, things tend to magically flow effortlessly.

Through the breath, we are able to deeply focus doing the work that we are meant to do and that gives us a deep sense of purpose and fullfillment.

And while it may sound out there or hippie to some, no one can deny the magnetism of a business leader who is leading from a place of peace and equanimity.

Science is now quickly catching up to the mysticism of breathwork, as displayed in many bestselling books such as Breath by James Nestor.

Developing my own breathwork practice as a travel business professional helped me to:

  • Begin to feel deeply grounded

  • Regain my sovereignty and hold my boundaries

  • Sleep better

  • Attract my tribe, ideal clients, and suppliers

  • Gain major insights in my business and my life

  • Allow things to fall into place easily

  • Be generally more easeful

  • Gain massive clarity

  • Embody peace

  • Align my intentions and actions

  • Tap into the wisdom of the heart

I’m now incorporating breathwork as a part of my business coaching for travel industry leaders and as the Co-founder of Women Travel Leaders
